Do you feel like running your own business a lonely gig?

Being an entrepreneur has many advantages. You get to be your own boss. Set your own schedule and have more control over your future. The downside is it can be very isolating. You probably go from training a client to spending time running your business without much contact with other people. Perhaps every once in a while you attend a networking event but then things get busy and that quickly drops to the wayside.

The problem with being isolated is that you start to miss interacting with others. It’s also harder to come up with new ideas or stay on top of industry trends because you aren’t being exposed to new information on a regular basis. You may even begin to wonder if operating a business is something you want to continue doing and be tempted to look for a steady job.

The best way to alleviate your isolation is to commit time in your schedule to meet with other people. Just recently a business coaching client told me that she meets with a group of women twice a month. These women are all from different backgrounds and businesses. They help each other with business issues and hold each other accountable for their actions. She expressed how much she enjoys their help and appreciates their company. I have another business client who takes music classes. While this doesn’t necessarily help to grow her business, it does get her meeting new people.

While there is no shortage of internet social networking sites available for people to join, I recommend that in addition to these networking forums you also find a face-to-face group. There’s nothing that can take the place of human contact and interaction.

You don’t have to feel isolated while operating your small business. You just need to make connecting with other people one of your top priorities. Try not to think of it as trying to gain new business but to keep up your social skills and just enjoy the company of others. You will be much happier and your personal and business life will be more fulfilled.
