Marketing basics for personal trainers – Finding your niche

I train anyone. This is a statement I’ve heard many times from personal trainers. Unfortunately spending your time and money marketing to everyone can be extremely time consuming and expensive. I understand it can be difficult when first starting out to chose a target market. You may think that by narrowing your focus you will lose business but in fact by targeting a specific niche you actually gain business and here’s why.

1. Your marketing efforts will be targeted to a specific group of people.

2. It’s easier to research the needs of a spefic target audience.

3. The time you spend networking becomes more focussed.

4. You can establish yourself as an expert in a particular area and be the go to person for training.

5. Sales will be more organic instead of pressured because people will recognize your expertise and want to train with you.

If you aren’t sure how to find a market niche, create a list of the type of clients you would like to train. You may decide you like to work with athletes, runners or new exercisers. Once you identify who you are most passionate about training  you can then start working on developing your market plan.

You don’t have to go it alone. If you would like some help in discovering your your market niche and preparing your marketing plan you can contact me (Donna Hutchinson at edgefit@shaw.ca) for assistance.
